Born in Plant City, Florida, James Robert Weaver was raised in Lima, Ohio. Driven by a desire to serve his country, he earned a Congressional appointment to the newly established United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, joining the historic Class of 1959 as a member of Cadet Squadron 6.

During his time at the Academy, "Doodles"—as he was affectionately known by his classmates—was recognized for his infectious enthusiasm, relentless work ethic, and affinity for instigating lively cadet "bull sessions." Outside of academics and military training, James was an avid sports enthusiast who excelled in tennis, intramural athletics, and riflery. He also harbored a passion for music, maintaining an expansive record collection that provided a soundtrack for his squadron mates during rigorous cadet days.

OPERATIONAL SERVICE & COMBAT HEROISM IN VIETNAM

Upon graduating and receiving his commission in June 1959, Lt. Weaver entered pilot training, beginning a 15-year career characterized by exceptional airmanship and courage.

His operational assignments began in 1960 with the 384th Air Refueling Squadron at Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts, where he flew aerial refueling missions until 1965.

As the conflict in Southeast Asia escalated, Captain Weaver was deployed to South Vietnam, serving with the 12th Air Commando Squadron based at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. Flying the UC-123 Provider aircraft in combat conditions, Captain Weaver repeatedly demonstrated extraordinary heroism. During operations in 1967, he exposed his aircraft to intense enemy ground fire to protect crippled friendly aircraft. For these acts of bravery, he was twice awarded the Silver Star. His name is honored at the U.S. Air Force Academy Southeast Asia Plaza of Heroes.

Following his tour in South Vietnam, he served as a pilot with the 13th Tactical Bomb Squadron out of Clark Air Base in the Philippines in 1966.

EXCHANGE SERVICE & ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

In 1970, Major Weaver was assigned to the 1137th Special Activities Squadron stationed at RAF Greenham Common in the United Kingdom, serving on exchange duty with British military forces.

On May 1, 1970, while conducting a test flight in a British English Electric Canberra jet bomber, Major Weaver was tragically killed when his aircraft crashed off the southern coast of England.

Major James R. Weaver was returned home to Colorado and laid to rest at the U.S. Air Force Academy Cemetery. He is remembered by his Class of 1959 classmates as a dedicated aviator, a brave combat pilot, and a selfless officer who exemplified the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
