LIEUTENANT COLONEL JAMES EDWARD WARREN
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959
James Edward Warren was born in Blythe, California, to Annie Mae and Newman M. Warren. He received a congressional appointment to attend the United States Air Force Academy with the historic Class of 1959. Known affectionately to his classmates by nicknames including "Earl," "Jim," "Henry," and "Buck," he enjoyed playing football during his academy years.
On June 9, 1959, he graduated as a member of the historic first graduating class of the United States Air Force Academy.
MILITARY & CIVIL SERVICE CAREER
Upon graduation, Lieutenant Colonel Warren entered navigator training at Mather Air Force Base, serving there from 1959 to 1960. He was subsequently assigned as a navigator to the 384th Bomb Wing at Little Rock Air Force Base from 1960 to 1964. In 1965, he served as a navigator with the 46th Bomb Squadron at Grand Forks Air Force Base.
Over the course of his 27-year Air Force career, Lt. Col. Warren logged over 5,000 flying hours before retiring from active duty in 1984 as a Lieutenant Colonel (O-5). Following his military service, he continued serving his nation in civil service at Tinker Air Force Base until his retirement in January 1995.
PERSONAL HISTORY & LEGACY
Lieutenant Colonel Warren resided in Norman, Oklahoma. Remembered by family, friends, and classmates for his humility, decency, and compassion, he passed away in 1999, in Houston, Texas.
He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Harrison and Kelly Warren; his son, James E. Warren Jr.; his grandson, Bennett Harrison; his brother, Newman Warren; and his dear friend, Sharon Cheves.
