COLONEL WILLIAM MORGAN "BILL" TONEY
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959

William Morgan "Bill" Toney was born in Arkansas and was raised in El Dorado, Arkansas. He received a Senatorial appointment to the United States Air Force Academy as a member of the historic Class of 1959, he was assigned to Cadet Squadron 8.

During his cadet years, Bill earned a reputation among his peers as a highly diligent cadet and an "establisher." An avid sportsman and organizational leader, he served as:
• Captain of the USAFA Golf Team
• President of the Judo Team
• Commander of the Skeet Club
• Cadet in Charge of the Gun Club
• Founder / Founder-establisher of the USAFA Hunting Club

MILITARY CAREER & OPERATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS

Following graduation and commissioning in 1959, Toney served 27 years in the United States Air Force as an officer and rated Navigator.

• 3rd Air Transport Squadron (1959–1963): Began operational flying duties as a Navigator stationed at Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina.

• Graduate Education & Academic Duty (1963–1969): Earned a Master of Science degree from North Carolina State University in 1965, after which he returned to the U.S. Air Force Academy as an Assistant Professor of Physics.

• 773rd Tactical Airlift Squadron (1969–1971): Deployed to Clark Air Force Base, Philippines, serving as C-130B Instructor Navigator during the Vietnam Conflict era.

• 8th Military Airlift Squadron (1971–1974): Served as Navigator and Scheduling Officer at McChord Air Force Base, Washington.

• 71st Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron (1974–1982): Assigned to Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, where he served in strategic rescue and recovery operations.

CIVILIAN CAREER & COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

Following his 27-year military career, Lt Col Toney remained in Alaska and transitioned to academia. From 1982 to 1990, he served as an Instructor of Mathematics at Anchorage Community College in Anchorage, Alaska, continuing his passion for teaching and education in his local community.
