CAPTAIN JOHN ROBERT STEVENS
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959
John Robert Stevens was born in Niagara Falls, New York, to Earl R. and Margaret (Watts) Stevens. Raised in Niagara Falls, he graduated from LaSalle High School in 1955 before entering the newly formed United States Air Force Academy.
At the Academy, John was assigned to Cadet Squadron 1. During his cadet years, he demonstrated a commitment to leadership and extracurricular activities, serving as an Honor Representative, competing on the wrestling team, and participating actively in the Forensic Association. In June 1959, he had the distinction of graduating with the Academy’s historic first graduating class.
MILITARY SERVICE & AVIATION
Following graduation and pilot training, Captain Stevens served as an Air Force pilot, specializing in the KC-135 Stratotanker. During his military career, he deployed for three tours during the Vietnam War, performing essential aerial refueling missions.
His duty assignments included tours at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey and Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California, where he served with the 904th Air Refueling Squadron. Over his 12 years of total service, he achieved the rank of Captain (O-3) before receiving an honorable discharge in 1967.
CIVILIAN CAREER
After leaving active duty, John transitioned into the private sector, applying his technical background to careers with aircraft parts manufacturers across the country. His work took his family to Rochester, New York; Pottsville, Pennsylvania; Alma, Michigan; and Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Later in his career, John served as a public servant with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Washington, D.C., until his retirement in 2004.
PERSONAL LIFE, COMMUNITY & LEGACY
On April 14, 1963, John married Carol Agnes Manfred. Together, they built a family and shared 53 years of marriage, raising three children: John, Heather, and Dawn.
Following his retirement from HUD in 2004, John and Carol relocated to Columbia City, Indiana, to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Throughout his life, John maintained a passion for aviation, closely following new developments and technological advancements in the field. He was an avid reader, an outstanding cook, and a devoted Christian.
Known for his servant's heart, John actively contributed to his community. He served on the Board of Directors for the Whitley Crossings Neighborhood Corporation, was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church, and frequently volunteered his time for church maintenance projects and church camp facilities.
Captain John Robert Stevens passed away in 2016. He was laid to rest at Green Hill Cemetery with military honors.
