COLONEL JOHN MICHAEL REEVES
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959

Originally hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, John Michael Reeves earned a congressional appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, joining the pioneer Class of 1959. During his cadet years in Cadet Squadron 02, "Precious"—as he was affectionately nicknamed by classmates—was widely known for his red hair, sharp wit, and quick verbal humor.

A standout athlete and leader on campus, John served as Captain of the USAFA Tennis Team, where his skills earned him a reputation as a red-headed tennis wonder. Beyond athletics, he contributed significantly to cadet life and class tradition by serving on the Ring and Crest Committee and leading as the managing editor of the cadet humor publication, Dodo. He graduated with the historic Class of 1959, embarking on a distinguished 31-year military career.

MILITARY CAREER & SERVICE

Following graduation, Colonel Reeves trained as an Air Force Navigator. His early flying assignments included navigating B-47 bombers with the 486th Bombardment Squadron at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, followed by weather reconnaissance operations with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron at Hunter Air Force Base, Georgia.

In 1965, Colonel Reeves stepped into the world of Air Operations and Special Operations when he deployed to South Vietnam with the 310th Air Commando Squadron at Nha Trang Air Base. Serving during the height of the Vietnam War, he flew combat missions in tactical airlift and air commando roles, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and six Air Medals for gallantry and outstanding airmanship under fire.

Upon returning from Southeast Asia in 1966, he continued shaping Special Operations doctrine as a Navigator and Plans Officer with the 319th Air Commando Squadron and the Air Commando Wing at England Air Force Base, Louisiana, later transitioning to the 1st Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Florida.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Colonel Reeves moved into high-level operational leadership and joint test roles. He served as Operations Staff Officer and Director of Operations for Special Forces Headquarters at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, before assignment to Headquarters Tactical Air Command (TAC) at Langley Air Force Base as a Plans Officer within the Air-Land Forces Application Directorate. Following attendance at the prestigious U.S. Army War College (1978–1979), he stepped into joint test leadership at the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) and served as Director of the Command, Control, and Communications Countermeasures (C3CM) Joint Test Force at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Over his 31 years of active duty, his military accomplishments were recognized with the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Meritorious Service Medal (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster).

POST-MILITARY & CIVILIAN LIFE

After retiring from active service as a Colonel (O-6), John transitioned into defense technology and consulting. From 1986 to 2002, he served as a Senior Engineer for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, applying his deep operational expertise to complex military defense programs. He continued to serve as a defense consultant through 2009.

Colonel John Michael Reeves passed away on May 2, 2009, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to his nation, enduring contributions to Special Operations, and cherished memories among his Class of 1959 classmates.
