David Joe "Joe" Phillips came to the United States Air Force Academy from Burbank, California, after receiving a Congressional appointment. Assigned to Cadet Squadron 4, Joe quickly earned a reputation among his classmates as a warm, protective leader who possessed both athletic prowess and a lighthearted spirit. Affectionately nicknamed "Tons of Fun" by his squadron mates, he was renowned for often shielding his peers from upper-echelon wrath when squad antics brought scrutiny from above.
A standout dual-sport athlete for the Falcons, Joe excelled in both baseball and football. Standing 6-foot-3, he played left tackle on the gridiron and etched his name into Academy football history during the Falcons' historic Cotton Bowl appearance, where he was honored with the Cotton Bowl Outstanding Lineman Award for his dominant trench play.
Following graduation with the inaugural Class of 1959, Joe entered Air Force pilot training, completing his instruction at Spence Air Base and Webb Air Force Base between 1959 and 1962. He then transitioned to operational fighter aviation in 1962, piloting the F-101 Voodoo with the 84th Fighter Interceptor Squadron stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base, California.
From 1962 to 1964, Joe returned to Colorado Springs to serve his alma mater as an Assistant Football Coach for the USAFA Falcons, mentoring the next generation of cadet-athletes. Following his active Air Force tour, he transitioned his military flying career to the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1964 to 1968, flying the A-4 Skyhawk and rising to the rank of Captain (O-3).
In 1968, Joe stepped into the civilian business sector, taking over and heading his family’s auto dealership. For 36 years—from 1968 until 2004—he served as President of David J. Phillips Buick-Pontiac-Mazda Inc. in Laguna Hills, California, establishing a legacy of leadership in his local business community.
