Michael "Mike" Conlon Murphy was born in New York City in 1937, to Bessie and Patrick Murphy—Irish immigrants who crossed the Atlantic in search of the American Dream. Mike grew up in the Bronx alongside his brother, Bob, playing stickball, going to Yankees games, and visiting family in Boston. He attended Mount Saint Michael Academy, where his success in the classroom and on the football field caught the eye of Ivy League recruiters. Yet it was the promise of a brand-new institution nestled against the Rocky Mountains that captured his imagination: the United States Air Force Academy.

Entering with the historic pioneer Class of 1959, Mike brought his trademark energy to Cadet Squadron 2. He played on the offensive line for the Falcon football team and lent his quick Irish wit to The Dodo, the cadet humor magazine. The Academy channeled his restless drive into patriotic service—and brought a fortuitous twist of fate. A Denver mother’s gentle insistence convinced her daughter, a raven-haired beauty named Mary Kathleen "Mary Kay" Connors, to accept a 4th of July blind date with young cadet, Mike. That picnic sparked a 70-year love affair. The couple married during June Week right after Mike graduated on June 3, 1959, and were married 67 years!

MILITARY SERVICE & PROFESSIONAL PATH

Mike had never driven a car before coming to the Academy, so learning to fly an airplane was a steep learning curve. He adapted quickly and became a Bombardier Navigator serving five years on active duty and four in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. His duty included flight test operations at the Lockheed plant in Marietta, Georgia, and overseas deployments during the Vietnam War with the 700th Military Airlift Squadron out of Dobbins Air Force Base.

While serving at Lockheed in Georgia, Mike earned a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University in 1964, followed by a Juris Doctor from Emory University School of Law in 1966. The legal profession was a natural fit for a voracious reader and consummate arguer—a man who would happily argue both sides of a case just for the sheer satisfaction of being right twice. He spent 23 years as a partner at Troutman Sanders in Atlanta, leading its employment law section and representing major clients like Georgia Power and Turner Broadcasting. Mike also learned from the example of his friend and mentor, the late Gov. Carl Sanders, and became deeply involved in community service, dedicating his time to the YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta, the State Bar of Georgia, and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta.

He later opened his own practice with his close friend Bob Marshall in Peachtree Corners, retiring from trial work at age 81. He immediately began volunteering with Gwinnett Legal Aid. In 2022, the organization named him Volunteer of the Year for his work helping victims of domestic abuse.

A LIFE OF SERVICE, FAMILY & JOY

In the second act of their lives together, Mike and Mary Kay moved to Peachtree Corners, hanging a door knocker on their new home engraved with two simple words: "Answered Prayers." Deeply woven into their community, they helped build Mary Our Queen Catholic Church, where Mike served faithfully as a member and usher. When invited to run for the local school board, Mike recognized that Mary Kay—armed with a doctorate in education—was the real star candidate. He stepped up as her enthusiastic campaign manager, proudly boasting that he "never lost an election" as she went on to win seven consecutive terms.

Mike felt a deep calling to give back to the institution that shaped his life, serving on congressional selection boards for three Georgia representatives to help nominate future generations of service academy cadets to have the same life-changing opportunity that he did at 17. He coached high school mock trial teams, served on civic boards, and spent years making trips across the country to stay connected with his beloved fellow "59ers."

Above all, Mike loved relentlessly. Whether cheering on his daughters at their games, devouring a thriller in a single sitting, or logging lap after lap in the Atlanta Athletic Club pool with his trusty walker propped by the water's edge into his 87th summer, he lived with boundless warmth and humor. He passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 88, leaving behind his wife Mary Kay, daughters Holly, Emily, and Patricia, two cherished grandchildren, and a legacy enriched by service, family, and lifelong devotion. He is remembered locally on the Peachtree Corners Veterans Monument.
