Colonel Max Ivan Miller, Jr. was born in North Carolina, his early desire to serve deeply shaped by his military upbringing. His father, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, recognized history in the making in 1954 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation establishing the United States Air Force Academy. Handing Max a newspaper clipping of the announcement, his father simply asked, "What do you think of this?" Inspired, Max applied for entrance not expecting to be selected; but when he was, he felt very honored and committed to making every day count.

On July 11, 1955, he stepped onto the temporary campus at Lowry Air Force Base as one of the original 306 trailblazing cadets. He was now a permanent part of history—a proud member of the iconic Class of 1959, affectionately known as the "First Falcons."

Max often recalled the surreal nature of those early days, wearing tailored khakis and learning to march under Air Training Officers—mostly West Point and Annapolis graduates. Walter Cronkite was there filming the dedication for national news.

Demonstrating strong peer leadership early on, Max has been serving as an active class officer for almost seven decades now. Later, succeeding Joseph DeSantis, Max took the reins as the President of the Class of 1959, a lifetime role leading and organizing for his surviving classmates and their families.

OPERATIONAL SERVICE AND VIETNAM COMMAND

Following graduation, Max completed pilot and navigator training from 1959 to 1960. He initially flew KC-135 Stratotankers within the Strategic Air Command (SAC), serving with the 306th Air Refueling Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, and the 407th Air Refueling Squadron at Homestead Air Force Base, Florida.

After a period of advanced academic training, the Air Force noted that he had spent nine continuous years on flying status without a Southeast Asia deployment. Volunteering for duty in the Vietnam War, Max transitioned to the tactical airlift mission. He deployed to CCK Air Base, Taiwan, serving as an Instructor Navigator with the 50th Tactical Airlift Squadron. Over the course of the conflict, he flew a staggering 600 combat missions in various models of the C-130 Hercules, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals for his actions in theater.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE & TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS

Throughout his 30-year military career, Colonel Miller balanced operational deployment with intense academic rigor, heavily investing himself back into the Academy. He earned his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (M.S.E.E.) from the University of Colorado in 1965 and later completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Denver.

He served multiple tours at USAFA as a faculty member, first as an EE Instructor (1967–1968) and later as an Associate Professor and Director of the Core Course in Electrical Engineering (1972–1976). Passionate about cadet mentorship, Max frequently volunteered to tutor cadets on athletic trips—specifically with his beloved Falcon hockey team—allowing him to secure flight hours while keeping cadets academically on track.

His technical mastery led to prominent research and development roles. At Hill Air Force Base, he directed test engineering for the DC-130H aircraft and pioneering Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPVs, known today as UAVs/drones), including the BGM-34C and early cruise missiles. He later directed the Air Force Satellite Communications System Program Office at Hanscom Air Force Base and served as Director of the Space Installation Office (SIO) for SPACECOM at Peterson Air Force Base before retiring from active duty in 1990.

PAYING IT FORWARD: LEGACY AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Following a highly successful corporate career—including serving as the MILSTAR Program Manager and Chief Scientist for Titan Corp—Max committed his retirement to giving back to the military community in Colorado Springs. He served as Executive Vice President of The Home Front Cares, providing critical financial emergency relief to local military families.

His connection to USAFA never wavered. His son graduated from the Academy in 1999, exactly 40 years after him. Max spearheaded iconic heritage projects on campus, including designing and developing the General Harmon Bust and the Harmon Memorial Plaza. Furthermore, he helped fund and dedicate the Challenge Bridge at Doolittle Hall on the Heritage Trail in 2004. Max is known to frequently stand at the bridge to brief incoming basic cadets on its legendary "To Each Entering Cadet" plaque, directly shaping the character and leadership of generations of future Air Force leaders.
