Melvin John "Mel" Merz was born on June 18, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri. Raised with a strong sense of service and dedication, he earned a congressional appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, entering with the pioneer Class of 1959.
As a cadet at USAFA, Mel was assigned to Cadet Squadron 08 (CS-08). Known affectionately among his classmates by the nickname "Bro Moses", he earned a reputation for his calm demeanor, tact, and natural propensity for diplomacy during the challenging foundational years of the Academy. Outside of his military and academic duties, Mel was a well-rounded athlete who represented the Academy in soccer, wrestling, and track.
Upon graduating on June 3, 1959, with a Bachelor of Science degree, Lieutenant Merz was commissioned into the United States Air Force and began primary pilot training at Graham Air Base, Florida. Demonstrating strong airmanship and leadership, he earned his pilot wings and subsequently transferred to Laredo Air Force Base, Texas, in 1960. There, he joined the 3641st Pilot Training Squadron as an Instructor Pilot, dedicating his service to mentoring and developing the next generation of Air Force aviators.
Tragically, on March 10, 1961, First Lieutenant Melvin J. Merz was killed in a T-33 Shooting Star aircraft accident near Kirtland Air Force Base / Albuquerque, New Mexico, along with fellow classmate 1Lt Dana Lentz.
1Lt Merz is remembered by the Class of 1959 for his camaraderie, diplomatic spirit, athletic accomplishments, and ultimate sacrifice in service to his country.
