Career Highlights:

Major Paul Lasen, a distinguished member of the inaugural graduating class of the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1959, embodies a lifelong dedication to aviation and service. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Lasen's journey with the Air Force began in 1954 when he joined at Lackland Air Force Base, where he honed his skills in flight navigation. By June 1955, he had completed his training and earned his commission as a second lieutenant.

However, driven by an ambition to be part of a pioneering institution, Lasen made the significant decision to resign his commission on July 11, 1955, to join the very first class of cadets at the newly established Air Force Academy. His foresight proved instrumental in shaping his career, as he recognized the value of a comprehensive education and degree from the Academy as a pathway to his ultimate goal: becoming a pilot.

Upon graduating from the Academy in 1959, Lasen's dream of flight became a reality. He trained as a pilot and quickly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot. His combat service included a critical period during the Vietnam War, from 1969 to 1970, where he flew 128 combat missions in F-105 fighter bombers while assigned to Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base. His experiences in combat left a profound impact, and he often reflected on the significant losses endured, having taught many of the 44 friends he lost in the conflict how to fly.

Major Lasen served the Air Force for a total of 20 years, accumulating an impressive 5,500 hours in Air Force aircraft. Following his military retirement, his passion for aviation continued unabated, leading him to work as a flight instructor for private companies. Even into his late eighties and early nineties, Lasen remained an active pilot, a testament to his enduring connection to the skies.

His remarkable career has been marked by unique accolades, including the prestigious Wright Brothers "Master Pilot" award from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, recognizing over 50 years of continuous safe flight operations. In 2017, at the age of 83, Lasen achieved a lifelong dream, flying in the backseat of a Thunderbird’s F-16D Fighting Falcon, an honor rarely extended to individuals over 55. This flight, which saw him briefly take the controls, underscored his exceptional skill and comfort in the cockpit.

Major Paul Lasen's story is one of unwavering commitment, from his foundational role in the Air Force Academy's history to his valiant service in combat and his decades-long career as an aviator. His humility and profound love for flying and family define a legacy that continues to inspire.
