COLONEL THOMAS DANIEL HOUSE, JR.
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959
Colonel Thomas Daniel "Tom" House, Jr. dedicated 33 years of distinguished service to the United States Air Force, building a legacy as a masterful airlift commander, instructor pilot, and international operations expert.
Tom was from Toccoa, Georgia, and was the son of Thomas Daniel House, Sr. and Mary Grimsley House. His father was a Georgia native, and the family had deep roots in the northeast region of the state. For the historic Class of 1959, appointments were incredibly competitive because there were no graduating classes ahead of them and the campus was still operating out of its interim site at Lowry Air Force Base. He secured a highly coveted congressional appointment from his home state of Georgia to join the 306 original cadets who reported on July 11, 1955.
Tom arrived at the newly established United States Air Force Academy as a member of the historic First Class, joining Cadet Squadron 06. Upon graduating on June 25, 1959, he embarked on a flying career that spanned global theaters and critical Cold War operations.
WINGS AND AIRLIFT COMMAND
Tom entered pilot training immediately following graduation, honing his skills at Bainbridge Air Base and Vance Air Force Base from 1959 to 1960. He pinned on his wings and was assigned as a pilot to the 774th Troop Carrier Squadron at Sewart Air Force Base, Tennessee.
By 1962, he transitioned to Europe as an Aircraft Commander with the 41st Troop Carrier Squadron at Evreux Air Base, France. His mastery of tactical airlift operations led him back stateside to Lockbourne Air Force Base, Ohio, in 1964, where he served as an Instructor Pilot, training the next wave of aviators in the intricacies of troop and cargo delivery.
PACIFIC AND VIETNAM OPERATIONS
In the mid-1960s, as regional tensions escalated in Southeast Asia, Tom was assigned to Naha Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, with the 374th Tactical Airlift Wing. Serving as a Flight Examiner, he flew grueling tactical airlift missions supporting operations in the Vietnam War. For his exceptional airmanship, valor, and coolness under fire during these operations, he was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses and 11 Air Medals, heavily defining his operational expertise as a Major.
STAFF LEADERSHIP AND THE EUROPEAN THEATER
Returning stateside in 1970, Tom transitioned into staff leadership at Headquarters Military Personnel Center (MPC) at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, specializing in Officer Career Development. His exceptional performance earned him selection to intermediate service school abroad at the prestigious RAF Bracknell Staff College in the United Kingdom from 1974 to 1975.
This began an extraordinary nine-year continuous span in Europe, where his leadership intersected with joint allied strategy:
• SHAPE Belgium: Served as Executive Officer and Assistant Chief of Staff for Detachment 1-1141 Special Activities Squadron.
• RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge: Served as Deputy Base Commander and Deputy Commander for Resources for the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing.
• RAF Mildenhall: Directed critical regional logistics as Deputy Commander for Operations for the 513th Tactical Airlift Wing.
FINAL COMMAND AND POST-MILITARY LEGACY
Tom returned to the U.S. in 1983 to serve as Vice Commander of the 554th Operations Support Wing at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada—the "Home of the Fighter Pilot." His final assignment brought his career full circle internationally, serving as the Chief of the USAF Officer Exchange Program for Europe and the Middle East from 1985 until his retirement as a Colonel (O-6) in 1992.
Following his highly decorated military career, Tom transitioned to civilian enterprise in 1988 as a General Partner of Pine Nut Ridge LLLP based out of Carmel, California, focusing his energy on forest, farm, and wildlife management. Tom served as an active member of the Carmel River Advisory Committee, which advises the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District. He worked closely with local officials and conservationists on river bank stabilization, habitat restoration, and flood prevention projects.
