CAPTAIN JOSEPH ALEXANDER HARNITCHEK
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959

Captain Joseph Alexander Harnitchek was a proud member of the United States Air Force Academy’s historic Class of 1959—the vanguard "First Class" to graduate from the institution. He was the son of John and Mary Harnitchek of Pennsylvania. Arriving at the temporary Lowry Air Force Base campus from Pennsylvania in July 1955, Joseph joined a select group of young men tasked with quite literally building the traditions, culture, and military excellence of the new Academy from the ground up.

Assigned to Cadet Squadron 6 (CS-06), Joseph was known by his squadron mates as a steady, dependable friend with a keen mind and a sharp, dry wit. He actively contributed to the intense physical culture of the early Academy, competing on squadron intramural football and softball teams, and helping CS-06 establish its early identity. He proudly marched with his class when they officially moved to the permanent Colorado Springs campus in 1958, graduating and commissioning in June 1959.

Following graduation, Capt. Harnitchek entered active duty with a specialty focus in Personnel and Operations. From 1960 to 1963, he served at Headquarters, United States Air Force in Washington, D.C., managing personnel initiatives critical to the rapidly expanding Cold War-era Air Force. In 1963, he transferred to the 1001st Operations Squadron at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. There, he spent four years supporting vital operational and logistical demands at one of the military's most high-profile command hubs.

Though he was highly respected for his administrative and leadership capabilities, his military career was unexpectedly cut short due to medical reasons, and he was medically retired in the rank of Captain (O-3). Transitioning to the civilian corporate sector, Joseph utilized his extensive organizational background as a Market Representative for the Service Bureau Corporation in the Washington, D.C. area from 1967 to 1970.

Tragically, following a brave battle with a severe illness, Capt. Harnitchek passed away on October 2, 1970, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center at the age of 33. He is remembered by his Class of 1959 peers as a dedicated officer, a pioneering cadet, and an enduring part of the Academy's foundational legacy.
