LIEUTENANT COLONEL WILLIAM HERBERT GOLD
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959
Cadet Squadron: CS-05

Lieutenant Colonel William Herbert Gold was a member of the "Forever First" Class of 1959, the inaugural graduating class of the United States Air Force Academy. During his time as a cadet, he was a member of Cadet Squadron 5 and was among the pioneers who established the traditions and standards that define the Academy today.

His graduation in 1959 was a double celebration; like many of his classmates who had waited through four years of strict cadet life, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Janice, during the legendary June Week festivities, beginning a partnership that would last through twenty-five years of military moves and twenty-two combat medals.

Following his graduation and commissioning in 1959, Bill entered the specialized world of aerial navigation and electronic warfare. His early career took him through intensive training at Spence Air Base and Webb Air Force Base, leading to his qualification as an Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO). During the height of the Cold War, he served in the Strategic Air Command (SAC), flying with the 353rd Bomb Squadron at Lockbourne AFB.

Bill’s technical expertise led him to the B-58 Hustler program—the world's first supersonic bomber—where he served as a Defense Systems Operator (DSO) with the 64th Bomb Squadron and as an instructor at Little Rock AFB. His service later took him to the rugged environment of Alaska with the 6th Strategic Wing at Eielson AFB, where he operated as a Signal Monitor.

During the Vietnam War, Bill transitioned to tactical aviation, serving as a Weapon Systems Officer (WSO) with the 435th Tactical Fighter Squadron (the "Eagle Squad") at Ubon Air Base, Thailand. Flying the F-4 Phantom II, he flew numerous combat missions over Southeast Asia, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and an incredible 22 Air Medals for his courage and proficiency in the cockpit.

International Leadership: Allied Forces Northern Europe (Norway)
In 1972, Bill’s career pivoted from the tactical to the strategic when he was assigned to Headquarters Allied Forces Northern Europe (AFNORTH) in Oslo, Norway. Serving as the Electronic Warfare Branch Chief for Detachment 3 of the 1141st Special Activities Squadron, Bill represented the United States in a sensitive, multi-national environment during a critical phase of the Cold War.

In the fjords and frozen terrain of the "Northern Flank," Bill’s role was as much about character and diplomacy as it was about electronic warfare. He was tasked with integrating U.S. capabilities with those of our Norwegian and British allies. This required a leader who could build trust across language barriers and different military cultures—a hallmark of Bill’s steady, humble leadership style. His time in Norway demonstrated that a true leader doesn't just command; they collaborate, listen, and build the international bridges necessary to serve the nation’s broader security interests.

Bill concluded his 25-year distinguished military career as a Project Officer at the Tactical Air Warfare Center (TAWC) at Eglin Air Force Base.

Upon retiring from the Air Force, Bill settled in Spokane, Washington, where he began a successful second career in human resources and safety management. He spent over a decade with KeyTronic Corp and later served as a Regional Manager and Safety Officer for The James L. Groves Co. and Western Security.

A Legacy of Service in Spokane
Retirement from the Air Force in 1980 was merely a "change in command" for Bill. In Spokane, he became a respected leader at KeyTronic Corp, but his true impact was felt in his community. As an Elder in his church and a dedicated Rotary Club member, Bill translated "Service Before Self" into local action. Whether fly-fishing on a quiet morning or mentoring a young professional, Bill continues to carry the quiet dignity and legacy of the Class of 1959. He is a man of profound technical skill, immense bravery in the skies over Thailand, and a gentle spirit on the ground.
