BRIGADIER GENERAL ALBERT ANTHONY GAGLIARDI JR.
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959, Cadet Squadron 02

Brigadier General Albert Anthony Gagliardi Jr. was a pioneer of the United States Air Force Academy, entering with the historic first class in 1955 at the age of just 17. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Al came from humble beginnings. He possessed a drive that would propel him through a distinguished 31-year military career characterized by a unique blend of technical expertise, combat valor, and a deep-seated commitment to mentorship.

After graduating in 1959, General Gagliardi earned his wings at Laredo Air Force Base in 1960. His early career was defined by his skill as an educator, serving as a flight instructor at both Laredo and Randolph AFBs. His intellectual curiosity led him to the Air Force Institute of Technology, where he earned an M.S. in Aerospace Engineering in 1967.

After earning his wings and serving as an instructor at Laredo, General Gagliardi transferred to Randolph AFB in 1962. It was during this assignment in San Antonio that he met Katharine McMahon. The two were married in 1963, beginning a 48-year partnership that would see them through seventeen relocations, a combat tour, and the eventual rise to General officer rank. Katharine became a pillar of the various base communities they served, embodying the spirit of the Air Force family that Al so deeply cherished.

In 1968, General Gagliardi transitioned from the classroom to the cockpit of the F-4 Phantom II. Assigned to the 559th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam, he flew 186 combat missions. His bravery in the skies earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross and nine Air Medals, marking him as a seasoned combat veteran who understood the stakes of the training he would later oversee.

Returning to the Hall of Heroes In April 1969, fresh from the cockpit of the F-4 Phantom in Southeast Asia, General Gagliardi returned to the Academy. This time, he traded his flight suit for the lectern as an Assistant Professor of Aeronautics. For the next four years, he utilized his technical expertise and recent combat experience to mentor cadets, providing them with a living example of the "warrior-scholar" ideal. His tenure at USAFA was more than an assignment; it was a homecoming to the institution that had shaped him, allowing him to pour his knowledge back into the bedrock of the Air Force.

Throughout the 1970s and 80s, General Gagliardi held numerous high-level commands. While he reached the upper echelons of leadership—including a prestigious post as the Deputy U.S. Representative to the NATO Military Committee in Brussels—his heart remained with the airmen. He famously remarked that he was happiest while commanding the Air Force Survival School at Fairchild AFB. His leadership was deeply personal; when he completed his command of the 47th Flying Training Wing at Laughlin AFB, the local community and airmen lined the roads to bid him a tearful farewell.

Even in retirement, General Gagliardi’s devotion to the Air Force never wavered. He was instrumental in working with the citizens of Del Rio to prevent the closure of Laughlin AFB during base realignment talks. Beyond his uniform, Al was the "gold standard" for his family—a devoted husband to Katharine for 48 years and a proud father and grandfather who was known for his inclusivity and integrity. He passed away on December 11, 2011, leaving behind a legacy of service that began on the first day of the Academy’s existence.
