LIEUTENANT. COLONEL GERALD FRANCIS ELSBERND
U.S. Air Force Academy, Class of 1959, Cadet Squadron 9
THE EARLY YEARS AND THE FIRST CLASS
Gerald Francis Elsbernd, known to many of his classmates as "Jerry," was born on August 7, 1934, in Calmar, Iowa. Growing up in Iowa, Jerry was a farm boy at heart, though his teachers and family quickly recognized his rare talent for mathematics and physics—a talent that eventually led him away from the family farm and toward the newly established Air Force Academy in 1955. The son of Alois and Loretta Elsbernd, he carried the values of his Midwestern upbringing to the newly established United States Air Force Academy. As a member of the "First Class," Gerald was a pioneer of the Long Blue Line, navigating the uncharted waters of a fledgling institution.
While at the Academy, he was a member of Cadet Squadron 9. His time as a cadet was defined by the rigorous academic and physical demands of the "pioneer" era. On June 4, 1959—the same day he graduated with the historic first class—he married Joanne Strachan in Denver, beginning both his military career and his family life in a single momentous day. Jerry and Joanne shared over four decades of partnership until her passing in 2000.
A CAREER OF SERVICE AND VALOR
Upon graduation, Gerald entered pilot training at Bartow Air Base and Laredo Air Force Base. He spent the early 1960s flying for the 38th Air Transport Squadron at McGuire AFB and the 6486th Air Base Wing at Hickham AFB, Hawaii.
The defining chapter of his combat service took place in the skies over Southeast Asia. Serving with the 458th Tactical Airlift Squadron at Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam, from 1967 to 1968, Gerald piloted the C-7 Caribou. Known for its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities, the Caribou was essential for resupplying remote outposts. Gerald’s skill and bravery in these hazardous conditions earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster) and the Air Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters). He remained a fierce advocate for the Caribou and its mission for the rest of his life.
ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP AND TECHNICAL MASTERY
Following his combat tour, Gerald transitioned to the world of academia and engineering. He earned his Master’s degree from Auburn University and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio State University. He returned to his roots at the Air Force Academy from 1968 to 1973, serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Mechanics, and Materials (DFCEM).
After 25 years of dedicated service, Lt. Colonel Elsbernd retired from the Air Force, but his contributions to engineering continued for another 22 years. He served as a mechanical engineer for Harris Corporation in Quincy, Illinois, and as a consultant for Datron Systems in California.
COMMUNITY AND LEGACY
In Quincy, Gerald was an active and beloved community member. He lent his voice to the choir at St. John's Church, was a dedicated member of the Rotary Club and the Elks Lodge, and enjoyed time at the Spring Lake Country Club.
Gerald passed away on August 22, 2002, while in Alaska, following heart failure. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne, in 2000. He is remembered by his three sons, his daughter, and his classmates as a man of profound intellect, steady leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the "Class of '59" legacy.
