Major General Robert "Bob" John Dwyer’s journey from the earliest days of the United States Air Force Academy to his tenure as the Adjutant General of Nevada is a testament to a career defined by both grit and adaptability. A member of the "First Class," Bob was part of the pioneer group that transitioned from the interim site at Lowry Air Force Base to the Academy’s permanent home in Colorado Springs. Known to his squadron mates as a man of action, Bob exchanged a "promising career at a fruit stand" in Elmira Heights, New York, for the rigors of the Academy, where he was a multi-sport athlete in both football and track.

MILITARY SERVICE AND COMBAT LEADERSHIP
Following graduation in 1959, Bob entered pilot training at Moore and Laredo Air Force Bases. His early career saw him honing his skills in the cockpit of the T-37 and various tactical aircraft. His commitment to excellence was tested in the skies over Southeast Asia, where he served with the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing at Phan Rang Air Base. Flying high-stakes missions during the Vietnam War, Bob’s airmanship earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross and an impressive 14 Air Medals, reflecting his sustained bravery under fire.

LEADERSHIP IN THE SILVER STATE
In 1970, Bob transitioned to the Nevada Air National Guard, a move that would define the latter half of his career. Flying the RF-4 Phantom II, he rose through the ranks of the "High Rollers," eventually serving as the Chief of Plans. During this time, his commitment to the Academy remained a priority; he served as a USAFA Liaison Officer for Northern Nevada, mentoring the next generation of leaders from the Silver State.

In August 1983, Bob reached the pinnacle of state military service when he was appointed by the Governor as the Adjutant General for the State of Nevada. His appointment was historic; he was the first Air National Guard officer to hold the position in over 15 years. Overseeing both the Army and Air National Guard, he was a key figure in the modernization of the Nevada Guard’s infrastructure and readiness.

PERSONAL LIFE AND COMMUNITY
Beyond the cockpit, Bob was deeply integrated into the Reno and Carson City communities. Alongside his wife, Cynthia, he was known for his love of the outdoors and the high desert landscape. An avid golfer and dedicated supporter of local veteran initiatives, Bob spent much of his retirement involved in the USAFA Association of Graduates (AOG) and local civic organizations. His legacy is one of a "citizen-soldier" who never lost the spirited, competitive edge he first displayed on the Academy’s athletic fields.
