MAJOR GENERAL JOHN MICHAEL DAVEY
U.S. Air Force Academy, Class of 1959
John Michael Davey was born in San Diego, California, on June 18, 1937. Raised in a family with deep East Coast roots, he graduated from La Salle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island, and completed a year at the University of Notre Dame before accepting an appointment to the inaugural class of the United States Air Force Academy in 1955.
As a member of the "Pioneer Class," John—known affectionately as "Baby" by his classmates for his youthful appearance and quick smile—was part of the historic contingent that moved from the temporary site at Lowry Air Force Base to the permanent campus at Colorado Springs. He helped forge the traditions of the Cadet Wing that endure to this day.
COMBAT AND THE CARRIER DECK
General Davey’s operational career was defined by versatility and "joint" expertise long before it became a standard doctrine. After earning his wings, he served as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) attached to the 82nd Airborne Division, where he became jump-qualified and earned his Parachutist Badge.
One of the most distinguished chapters of his career was his selection for the Air Force-Navy Pilot Exchange Program.
• Carrier Operations: Serving with the Navy’s VF-41 "Black Aces" aboard the USS Independence, he logged over 300 carrier landings in the F-4 Phantom II—a remarkable achievement for an Air Force pilot.
• Vietnam Service: He flew 93 combat missions over North Vietnam, gaining a dual-service perspective on tactical air power that would inform his future leadership roles.
COMMAND AND STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP
During the height of the Cold War, General Davey was a cornerstone of tactical fighter modernization and European defense. His leadership spanned several critical echelons:
• Fighter Command: He served extensively at Ramstein Air Base, West Germany, commanding the 512th Tactical Fighter Squadron and serving as Assistant Deputy Commander for Operations for the 86th Tactical Fighter Group.
• Air Division Leadership: He held the rare distinction of commanding three major Air Divisions: the 832nd (Luke AFB), the 26th (March AFB), and the 25th (McChord AFB) between 1985 and 1989.
• Joint Policy: He concluded his 34-year career as the Director for Plans and Policy (J-5) at Headquarters, U.S. European Command in Stuttgart.
A LEGACY OF SERVICE AND EDUCATION
Following his retirement from active duty in 1993, General Davey transitioned to the classroom, dedicating fifteen years to shaping the next generation of military leaders. He served as a Professor of Military History and Strategy at the Armed Forces Staff College (1903–2004) and later as a Senior Fellow at the Joint Forces Staff College (2004–2008).
John’s journey was defined by his 60-year partnership with his wife, Janice, whom he met as a cadet and married just days after graduation in June 1959. Together, they navigated the challenges of the Cold War fighter community, raising their family with the humor and "old school" integrity that characterized John's life both in and out of the cockpit.
