CAPTAIN JAMES EDWARD CHAPMAN
U.S. Air Force Academy Class of 1959
Cadet Squadron: CS-11

James “Jim” Edward Chapman, a proud member of the "Forever First" Class of 1959. Born in Purvis, Mississippi, Jim’s journey to the Air Force Academy was preceded by his time at Georgia Tech. Known by his classmates as “Chapie,” he was recognized for his persistence and his roots as a "confirmed Rebel" from the South.

Upon graduation in 1959, Jim entered pilot training, embarking on a career focused on heavy aircraft. Between 1960 and 1966, he served as a B-52 Stratofortress pilot, stationed primarily at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, and Carswell AFB, Texas. His service during the height of the Cold War was distinguished by his skill and dedication, earning him the Air Medal.

Following his honorable service in the Air Force, Jim transitioned to civil aviation in 1966. He joined Delta Airlines as a pilot, based out of the Dallas-Fort Worth hub. Over a career spanning three decades, he safely guided commercial airliners across the skies until his retirement in 1996.

Beyond the cockpit, Jim was a devoted family man. He married the love of his life, Karen, on November 3, 1969, in Rochester, Michigan. Together they shared 55 years of marriage and a life filled with travel, golf, and Jim’s legendary sense of humor. He is remembered by his classmates and family as a man who met every challenge with the "enthusiasm and spirit" first noted in his cadet days.
