A LEGACY OF SERVICE AND FAITHFULNESS
Colonel Jack Boyd Bryan, a proud member of the United States Air Force Academy’s historic first graduating class, lived a life defined by unwavering devotion to his nation, his family, and his community. Known by his classmates in CS-01 for his Oklahoma roots and a "Will Rogers" temperament—never meeting a man he didn’t like—Jack carried that spirit of camaraderie and excellence through a distinguished 30-year military career.
MILITARY CAREER
After commissioning in 1959 and earning his wings at Webb AFB, Jack began his operational career in the cockpit of the KC-135 Stratotanker. During the height of the Cold War and the escalation of the Vietnam conflict, he served as an Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot with the 310th and 305th Air Refueling Squadrons.
In 1967, Jack deployed to Utapao Air Base, Thailand, supporting critical refueling missions for Operation Arc Light. He later transitioned to the 42nd Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (TEWS) at Takhli Air Base, flying the EB-66 Destroyer. This was a high-stakes role, providing electronic reconnaissance and jamming to protect strike packages from North Vietnamese surface-to-air missiles. His bravery and skill in the theater of combat earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross and five Air Medals.
Transitioning from the cockpit to leadership and procurement, Jack earned a Master’s degree from George Washington University. He became a vital figure in Air Force acquisition, serving as the Chief of the F-15 Manufacturing Branch during the critical early years of the Eagle’s development. He concluded his career as the Commander of the Defense Contract Administration Services Region in Dallas, overseeing complex defense operations with the same integrity he learned as a cadet.

Jack’s life was a testament to the Academy’s core values: Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. He is remembered not only as a pioneer of the Class of 1959 but as a faithful husband, father, and patriot.

REFLECTIONS ON THE "FIRST CLASS"
"Jack, like another famous Oklahoman, Will Rogers, never met a man that he didn't like. His cheerfulness and his industry made him the ideal roommate."
